UV lamps are the heart of every photochemical system. They are the element that provides the necessary photon flux so that, once photons are absorbed by the irradiated molecules, they become activated and the desired chemical reaction occurs.

The activation energy of the molecules participating in the reaction comes from the photons emitted by the lamp; thus, the energy content of these photons determines whether the reaction will be achieved. Since the energy of a photon is directly related to its frequency, the emission spectrum is the primary parameter characterizing a UV lamp. The second is its emission power, a factor that becomes increasingly important as the sample volume increases or the UV transmittance of the liquid decreases.
