The Photon Cabinet safety enclosure provides both a reliable shield against the occupational hazards associated with UV light and chemical handling, as well as a centralized housing for integrating all the components of a photochemical system.

The Photon Cabinet is the foundation upon which the MPDSBasic and MPDSEvo photochemistry systems are built. This double-walled cabinet is manufactured from stainless steel and has been designed to provide the operator with a modular base to construct a photochemistry system tailored to their needs, while offering maximum protection against the occupational hazards associated with these types of reactors.

Ultraviolet radiation is harmful to the eyes and skin and can cause irreparable damage if minimum precautions are not taken. Furthermore, materials exposed to UV light undergo accelerated aging and can degrade until they become unusable. In addition, medium-pressure lamps reach surface temperatures of up to 850°C and operate at lethal voltages, requiring protection against these factors as well as against the chemicals and vapors that may be present.

The use of photochemical reactors without optical protection and a safety interlock has been mandatory since the applicable regulations came into force (October 2013). Moreover, a risk analysis in accordance with the EN ISO 12100 standard confirms that operating a photochemical reactor without a safety enclosure does not meet the requirements to protect laboratory personnel.

For this reason, MPDS modular photochemistry reactors are only supplied alongside the Photon Cabinet protective enclosure, which also provides the necessary connections and power supply for the system’s operation. In the case of MPDSEvo systems, two additional cabinets are supplied: one to house the power supply and other instrumentation (such as a temperature controller or a spectroradiometer), and another for accessory elements (pumps, tanks, stirrers, etc.).
